Why Is This Important?Chronic lower respiratory disease (CLRD) is the fourth leading cause of death in the US and fifth in New Jersey.
How Are We Doing?In New Jersey, over 3,000 deaths each year are due to chronic lower respiratory disease (CLRD). In the total population and among each racial/ethnic group, males have a higher death rate than females, but the difference is only statistically significant for Blacks. Among females, the rate is highest among Whites, but among males, the rate is nearly identical for both Whites and Blacks. County rates per 100,000 population (age-adjusted) range from a low of 20 in Hunterdon to a high of 51 in Gloucester.
What Is Being Done?The [http://pacnj.org/ Pediatric/Adult Asthma Coalition of New Jersey] (PACNJ) was founded in 2000 to act as a statewide clearinghouse for pediatric asthma programs and services. NJDOH has partnered with other departments within the state to create an Interdepartmental Asthma Plan to serve as a coordinated statewide planning guide.
