Causes of Death: Groups, Ranking, and Leading Causes

In order to provide a consistent standard for ranking causes of death coded under ICD-10, the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) prepared a list of 113 selected causes of death, of which, 52 cause groups are eligible to be ranked as leading causes of death. For more information about the NCHS rankings see Procedures for ranking causes of death on the NCHS website.

About half of the rankable causes of death are rare in New Jersey (fewer than 100 deaths per year) and thus have been combined into one category leaving a list of 28 cause of death groups routinely used by the New Jersey Department of Health. The NJSHAD system provides the 28, 52, and 113 cause of death groups in the Mortality Query Module
