Alzheimer's disease was the seventh leading cause of death among U.S. and New Jersey residents in 2020.How Are We Doing?
The age-adjusted death rate due to Alzheimer's disease has been rising for over two decades. In New Jersey, nearly 2,700 deaths annually are due to Alzheimer's disease. In the total population and among each racial/ethnic group, females have higher death rates than males. In 2020, Alzheimer's disease was the fifth leading cause of death among women and eleventh among men in New Jersey. The age-adjusted death rate due to Alzheimer's disease among Whites in New Jersey is significantly higher than among other racial/ethnic groups. Alzheimer's disease was the fourth leading cause of death among persons aged 85 years and over in 2020. County rates per 100,000 population (age-adjusted) ranged from a low of 9.2 in Hunterdon to a high of 37.1 in Cumberland in 2018-2020.How Do We Compare With the U.S.?
