Complete Health Indicator Report of Deaths due to End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD)

Definition

Deaths with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) as the underlying cause of death ICD-10 code: N18.0 (1999-2010), N18.5 (2011 and after)

Numerator

Number of deaths due to end-stage renal disease

Denominator

Total number of persons in the population

Why Is This Important?

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) and ESRD result in poor quality of life and premature death. ESRD is very costly to treat, such that nearly 25% of the Medicare budget is used to treat people with CKD and ESRD. Diabetes is the most common cause of kidney failure.[https://www.healthypeople.gov/2020/topics-objectives/topic/chronic-kidney-disease ^1^]

Other Objectives

'''Healthy New Jersey 2020 Objective CKD-4''': Reduce the age-adjusted death rate due to end-stage renal disease (ESRD) per 100,000 population to 4.0 for the total population, 3.2 among Whites, 10.9 among Blacks, 3.6 among Hispanics, and 2.0 among Asians.

How Are We Doing?

The death rate due to ESRD continues to rise in New Jersey and nationally, despite a temporary decline that may or may not have been related to a change in the cause of death coding for ESRD. The rate among Blacks is more than double the rates among Whites, Hispanics, and Asians. Healthy New Jersey 2020 targets were not achieved.

How Do We Compare With the U.S.?

The New Jersey age-adjusted death rate due to ESRD is higher than the national rate.
