Definition

The rate of HIV transmission among adolescents and adults per 100,000 population

Numerator

Number of new HIV infections among persons aged 13 years and over

Denominator

Total number of persons aged 13 years and over in the population

Why Is This Important?

In the United States, HIV is spread mainly by having sex with or sharing drug injection equipment with someone who is infected with HIV. HIV cannot be spread by casual contact such as hugging or shaking hands.[http://www.cdc.gov/hiv/basics/index.html ^1^]
