Definition

Percentage of mothers that reported having insurance prior to or during their most recent pregnancy.

Numerator

Number of mothers that reported type of insurance prior to or during their most recent pregnancy.

Denominator

Total number of mothers that responded to the survey.

Data Interpretation Issues

Note that these figures are from the Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS) survey. Data from Medicaid claims or birth records may vary.

Why Is This Important?

Lack of health insurance is strongly associated with lack of access to health care services, particularly preventive and primary care.
