NumeratorNumber of tuberculosis cases alive at diagnosis for which HIV status is known
DenominatorTotal number of tuberculosis cases alive at diagnosis
Data Interpretation IssuesThe total population of TB cases includes persons of all ages, including young children who are unlikely to be tested for HIV if there are no known risk factors and older persons who have had the same primary care physician for many years and are also unlikely to be tested if there are no risk factors. Hence, there will always be a certain proportion of the population that is not been tested for HIV.
Why Is This Important?People living with HIV are more likely than others to become sick with TB. Worldwide, TB is one of the leading causes of death among people living with HIV.[https://www.cdc.gov/tb/topic/basics/tbhivcoinfection.htm ^1^]
Other Objectives'''Healthy New Jersey 2020 Objective TB-4''': Increase the proportion of tuberculosis cases alive at diagnosis for which HIV status is known to 90%.
How Are We Doing? The proportion of TB cases with known HIV status has been around 80% for several years. It is unlikely the Healthy New Jersey 2020 target of 90% will be met.
What Is Being Done? The [http://www.state.nj.us/health/hivstdtb/tb/ Tuberculosis Control Program] supports TB ambulatory care activities (clinical evaluation, treatment, prevention and epidemiology) at the county, municipal, and institutional level through the provision of health service grant funds, staff, medication, consultation, and education. The program also collaborates closely with the [http://globaltb.njms.rutgers.edu/ New Jersey Medical School's Global TB Institute] at Rutgers University to provide training.
