Health Indicator Report of Deaths due to End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD)
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) and ESRD result in poor quality of life and premature death. ESRD is very costly to treat, such that nearly 25% of the Medicare budget is used to treat people with CKD and ESRD. Diabetes is the most common cause of kidney failure.[https://www.healthypeople.gov/2020/topics-objectives/topic/chronic-kidney-disease ^1^]

How Are We Doing? The death rate due to ESRD had been rising in New Jersey and nationally, despite a temporary decline that may or may not have been related to a change in the cause of death coding for ESRD. The rate among Blacks is more than double the rates among Whites, Hispanics, and Asians.
How Do We Compare With the U.S.?The New Jersey age-adjusted death rate due to ESRD is slightly higher than the national rate.
