Health Indicator Report of Youth Suicide Attempts

Suicide is the 3rd leading cause of death among New Jersey teens.

Notes

Data for Whites, Blacks, and Asians do not include Hispanics. Hispanic ethnicity includes persons of any race.

Data Source

High School Youth Risk Behavior Survey, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, [https://www.cdc.gov/healthyyouth/data/yrbs/index.htm]

Data Interpretation Issues

In 2015 and 2017, the New Jersey Student Health Survey was unable to obtain the number of student responses needed to reach the 60% response rate required by the CDC to be able to weight the data to be representative of the New Jersey high school student population.

Definition

Actual suicide attempts among high school students in the 12 months prior to survey, regardless of whether medical attention was required

Numerator

Respondents who answered one or more times to the question: "During the past 12 months, how many times did you actually attempt suicide?"

Denominator

Total number of survey respondents in grades 9-12

Other Objectives

'''Healthy New Jersey 2020 Objective IVP-4''': Reduce suicide attempts by high school students (grades 9-12) to 6.5% for all high school students, 4.3% among Whites, 8.2% among Blacks, and 10.5% among Hispanics.

How Are We Doing?

Healthy New Jersey 2020 targets were met for the total population and the Hispanic population, but not among Whites or Blacks. No target was set for Asians due to sample size issues.
