How To Get New Jersey Data Using CDC Wonder


  • Choose a dataset on http://wonder.cdc.gov/

  • Choose data years.
    • Pre-1999 cause of death data coded under ICD-8 or ICD-9 are not directly comparable to data coded under ICD-10. This does not affect comparability of other variables across years.

  • Read the Data Use Restrictions and click I Agree near the bottom of the page.

  • To see how New Jersey compares to other states:
    • Step 1: Choose State as one of your Group Results By selections.
    • Step 2: Make no selections to show all states. Select states if you want to limit the comparison to certain states (e.g., NJ, NY, and PA only).

  • To see only New Jersey data:
    • Step 1: Do not choose State as one of your Group Results By selections.
    • Step 2: Select 34 New Jersey from the list.

  • To see how New Jersey counties compare to each other:
    • Step 1: Choose County as one of your Group Results By selections.
    • Step 2: Select 34 New Jersey from the list.

  • To see data for only one New Jersey county:
    • Step 1: Do not choose County as one of your Group Results By selections.
    • Step 2: Select 34 New Jersey from the list and then click the Open button below the list. Select the county of interest from the resulting list.

  • To compare data for two or more (but not all) New Jersey counties:
    • Step 1: Choose County as one of your Group Results By selections.
    • Step 2: Select 34 New Jersey from the list and then click the Open button below the list. Select the counties of interest from the resulting list.

  • Note that only counties with a total population of 250,000 or more are listed for the Infant Death query.

  • Follow the on-screen directions for the remaining Steps.
