NJSHAD Query System Tips
- For step-by-step query system examples see the Query System Tutorial
- Use age-adjusted rates when you want to compare areas, for example New Jersey and U.S. data.
- Use the small arrows in the table headers to sort and filter data columns.
- Be aware of data issues and data notes below the data table on the results page. They give information about the dataset that anyone using the data should know.
- To import data tables into Excel, use the Output to Excel button or select the output table starting with its title and copy (Ctrl-C) it, then paste (Ctrl-V) into an Excel worksheet.
- When looking for specifics on how something is measured or information about a topic or measure, check the Indicator List or corresponding Health Topics page.
- Zero values do not show in table output, so if you get a table that appears to be missing rows, it means that the value for that category is zero.
- If your table is all or mostly asterisks, that means the number of events is too small to calculate a reliable rate. Filter by fewer variables, group more years together, or broaden the geographic region to get usable data.
- Use a hyphen to indicate a range of codes, 'C00-C97'.
- Use a space or a comma between codes, 'I10, I12' or 'I10 I12'.
- When entering more than one code in a box, such as 'I10, I12,' the results will display all the records that have I10 or I12, combined.
- Codes can be entered in separate boxes to be displayed by each separate code.
- Lists of ICD codes are available on the Help page.
- Causes of death are listed alphabetically using NCHS terminology.
For example, Heart Disease as Diseases of Heart, Homicide as Assault, Suicide as Self-harm, and so forth.
- Enter ICD-9 E-codes with the E, for example E888 should be entered as 'E888'.
