FertRate
Fertility Rate: Live Births per 1,000 Female Population (Limit mother's age for age-specific fertility rate).
Age Specific Fertility Rate: The number of live births to women in a certain age group,
per 1,000 women in that age group.
e.g., Live births to adolescent mothers per 1,000 females of the same age in the
New Jersey population.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Due to a change in population estimation methodology at the U.S. Census Bureau, rates for 2020 and later are not directly comparable to rates from before 2020. After 2010-2020 intercensal estimates are released by the Census Bureau in late 2024, all rates will be recalculated to enable trend analysis.
About this dataset
The birth data in this NJSHAD query module come from the New Jersey Birth Certificate
database. The database is maintained by the New Jersey Department of Health,
Office of Vital Statistics and Registry. The population data used for rate denominators were
produced by the National Center for Health Statistics in collaboration with the U.S. Census Bureau.
All data shown are for New Jersey residents regardless of where the birth occurred.
How to build your query
The most current data year and all births are pre-selected in the steps below.
If you do not want to choose different years or filter your results by any maternal,
infant, or health services utilization characteristics, skip to the last STEP bar and
select how you would like to display the results (i.e., which rows and columns you
want in your data table) then click SUBMIT at the bottom left of the query builder
steps to get your query result.
If you want to only see data for certain years, maternal characteristics, infant
characteristics, or health services utilization characteristics, follow the numbered
steps below to narrow your query. When you are done filtering your query, open the
last STEP bar to select which rows and columns you want in your data table.
After that, click SUBMIT at the bottom left of the query builder steps to get your
query result.

Race and Ethnicity
Race and Hispanic ethnicity are collected separately on birth certificates.
Therefore each birth record has both a race (White, Black, etc.) and an ethnicity
(Hispanic or non-Hispanic) for the mother and data for race and ethnicity may be presented
separately (Race or Hispanic origin) or combined (Race/Ethnicity).
