- THE DATA IN THIS QUERY MODULE ARE NOT FINALIZED. All counts shown are temporary and will change. The module is updated monthly and should only be used for public health surveillance purposes, not research. The date the dataset was last updated will show in the Query Date Time Stamp below the Data Table after a query is submitted.
- The file contains some, but not all, deaths of NJ residents that occurred out of state.
- The total death count for a given date is mostly complete about a week after that date. However, cause of death coding takes at least a week and sometimes longer than a month for some records, therefore the most recent deaths have blank causes of death.
- Some records may have invalid or out-of-range values that still need correction.
- GRAPHS: Some graph types are not designed to be used with certain data types, therefore your selections may not produce the graphical display you expect it to. Interpret graphs produced within NJSHAD with caution.
Rates
Due to a change in population estimation methodology at the U.S. Census Bureau, rates for 2020 and later are not directly comparable to rates from before 2020. After 2010-2020 intercensal estimates are released by the Census Bureau in late 2024, all rates will be recalculated to enable trend analysis.

Mort
New Jersey law requires the prompt filing of a death certificate by the proper authority, such as hospital personnel, physicians, medical examiners, and funeral directors, in the event of a death occurring in the state. These certificates are submitted to the office of the State Registrar, where they are recorded and filed permanently. Statistics on deaths of New Jersey residents which occurred in other states are obtained through participation in the national Vital Statistics Cooperative Program (VSCP). Only deaths of New Jersey residents are included in the query system.
ICD
ICD stands for International Classification of Diseases. It is a coding system maintained by the World Health Organization and the U.S. National Center for Health Statistics. It is used to classify causes of death on death certificates and diagnoses, injury causes, and medical procedures for hospital and emergency department visits. These codes are updated every decade or so to account for advances in medical technology. The U.S. is currently using the 10th revision (ICD-10) to code causes of death.
About this dataset
THE DATA IN THIS QUERY MODULE ARE NOT FINALIZED. They come from the New Jersey Death Certificate database which consists of in-state deaths submitted to the New Jersey Department of Health, Office of Vital Statistics and Registry via the Electronic Death Reporting System (EDRS) and out-of-state deaths submitted to the New Jersey Department of Health via the State and Territorial Exchange of Vital Events (STEVE). All data shown are for New Jersey residents regardless of where the death occurred.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Due to a change in population estimation methodology at the U.S. Census Bureau, rates for 2020 and later are not directly comparable to rates from before 2020. After 2010-2020 intercensal estimates are released by the Census Bureau in late 2024, all rates will be recalculated to enable trend analysis.

Underlying Cause of Death
All causes of death in this NJSHAD module are underlying causes of death.
There are a variety of predefined causes of death to choose from. If
causes on the predefined lists do not meet your needs, you may enter your
own ICD-10 codes by selecting "User-defined causes."

How to Specify ICD-10 Codes
Enter the codes with or without the decimal point. Use a hyphen to indicate a range of codes.
Use a space or comma between codes.
Note that, for example, P23 includes all codes under P23 (congenital pneumonia),
from P23.0 (Congenital pneumonia due to viral agent) to P23.9 (Congenital pneumonia,
unspecified). Because the codes are alpha-numeric and not simply numeric, deaths coded
simply P23_ [underscore added to show blank space] will not be included in a range
from P23.0-P23.9 since P23_ is less than P23.0.
P23-P24 would include all codes under P23 and P24.
