ResOcc
The hospitalization data in the NJSHAD system only include
discharges of New Jersey residents from New Jersey hospitals.
ICD
The International Classification of Diseases (ICD) is a
coding system maintained by the World Health Organization and the U.S. National Center for Health Statistics. It is used to classify
causes of death on death certificates and diagnoses, injury causes,
and medical procedures for hospital and emergency department visits.
These codes are updated every decade or so to account for advances
in medical technology. The U.S. is currently using the 10th revision
(ICD-10), however the 9th revision (ICD-9) was used for hospital
and emergency department visits through September 30, 2015.
New Jersey's October 1 - December 31, 2015 records have been back-coded
to ICD-9.
UBData
The Uniform Billing (UB) database contains billing information and charges for services received, diagnosis and procedure codes following the International Classification of Diseases (ICD), and patient demographic information. The data are primarily designed for billing purposes and are reported for each episode of care.
The Office of Health Care Quality Assessment (HCQA) receives patient level hospital discharge data on a monthly basis through its data intermediary and provides the file "as is." The data are not audited and researchers should exercise caution when interpreting findings from analyses of these data.
Due to a change in population estimation methodology at the U.S. Census Bureau, rates for 2020 and later are not directly comparable to rates from before 2020. After 2010-2020 intercensal estimates are released by the Census Bureau in late 2024, all rates will be recalculated to enable trend analysis.
About this dataset
The data in this module come from all New Jersey licensed hospitals.
All hospital encounters in which the patient was an inpatient at the time
of discharge are included, regardless of their admission status.
How to build your query
The most current data year and all hospital discharges are pre-selected in the steps below.
If you do not want to choose different years or filter your results by any demographic or other characteristics, skip to the last STEP bar and select how you would like to display the results
then click SUBMIT at the bottom left of the query builder steps to get your query result.
If you want to only see data for certain years, demographic characteristics, payers, etc., follow the numbered steps below to narrow your query. When you are done filtering
your query, open the last STEP bar to select which rows and columns you want in your data table.
After that, click SUBMIT at the bottom left of the query builder steps to get your
query result.

ICDDiagP
User-defined ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes - primary diagnosis
Primary Diagnosis
Each hospitalization record may contain up to 13 diagnoses.
Primary diagnosis refers to the first-listed (main) diagnosis.
How to Specify ICD-10-CM Codes
Enter the codes, use a hyphen to indicate a range of codes, use a space or comma between codes.
Note that, for example, P23 includes all codes under P23 (congenital pneumonia),
from P23.0 (Congenital pneumonia due to viral agent) to P23.9 (Congenital pneumonia,
unspecified). Because the codes are alpha-numeric and not simply numeric, discharges coded
simply P23_ [underscore added to show blank space] will not be included in a range
from P23.0-P23.9 since P23_ is less than P23.0.
P23-P24 would include all codes under P23 and P24.
Injury codes included are Nature of Injury codes (S00-T98), not Cause of Injury codes (V01-Y98).
