As chlamydia is largely asymptomatic, good screening programs are necessary to diagnose and treat infections. The COVID-19 pandemic caused a large disruption to these screening programs. As syphilis and gonorrhea tend to be more symptomatic, they were also impacted, but to a lesser degree. Due to a change in population estimation methodology at the U.S. Census Bureau, rates for 2020 and later are not directly comparable to rates from before 2020. After 2010-2020 intercensal estimates are released by the Census Bureau in late 2024, all rates will be recalculated to enable trend analysis.

Race and/or ethnicity information is missing from more than a quarter of reports sent to the NJDOH Sexually Transmitted Disease Program (STDP). Interpret all STD data by race and/or ethnicity with extreme caution.
