Why Is This Important?

The deaths of children present a public health concern and an opportunity for prevention. The leading cause of death of children of all ages over one year is unintentional injuries which, for the most part, are preventable.

How Are We Doing?

The leading causes of death in 2021 among New Jersey children aged 1-4 years were unintentional injury and birth defects. Mortality rates among Black children were more than double the rates for White and Hispanic children.

How Do We Compare With the U.S.?

The death rate among New Jersey residents aged 1-4 years is significantly lower than the national rate and has been below the national Healthy People 2020 target of 26.5 deaths per 100,000 population for more than two decades.
